It’s become popular today to have profile across various social network sites.  It is a very simple way of staying in contact with people that you know and keep up with what is going on in their life.  Even though this technology is great there is a privacy issue to be concerned with.  There are some things to keep in mind when you want to be on social networks and still remain somewhat private.

First of all, stay on social networks that have some sort of privacy filter.  This means that your profile, instead of being open to the public, is only open to those you personally approve.  This is a good idea because you don’t want just anyone to see where you live and what you are doing at all times.  Some have got into trouble at places they have worked or want to work at.  Some potential college students have been turned down from schools for their activities on a social networking site.  Privacy is not just an issue for people who do things they might not want their boss to know, but also just a general rule of safety.

It’s a good idea to actually read the privacy policies of these social networking sites.  At times they try to be a little sneaky with their privacy policies.  One example is that Facebook at one point in time said that they could use the pictures that you upload at their discretion.  This meant that a picture of your child could be used in any matter they felt like.  It took someone reading the privacy policy and making others aware to get this changed.  This is a good practice especially if you are including your children in your profiles.

Realize that if you put something on the internet, regardless of an policies or security you are told about, can potentially be leaked out to others on the internet.  Never put things online that you don’t want to be shared.
